News | Volkswagen Compact Coupe Concept Unveiled

Volkswagen unveiled a nameless Compact Coupe concept which looks fairly ready for production. The concept part may be the hybrid powertrain which a 1.4L I4 putting out 150 horsepower and 110 lb-ft is matched with an electric motor raising total output to 177 hp and 177 lb-ft while getting 45 mpg. VW says it should hit 60 mph in 8.1 seconds and have a top speed of 141 mph with the hybrid setup.

The upcoming Chevrolet Volt has been big news in the auto industry and also has caused some criticism. It's not your typical hybrid like the Toyota Prius or Honda Insight. According to GM, it's an 'Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (E-REV). What the hell is an E-REV you ask? Well to put it simply, it's a hybrid that uses only battery power to propel it rather than a combination of gas and battery like the Toyota Prius. Once the battery gets depleted, a gas generator is used to recharge the battery only, not power the vehicle. The Prius on the other hand, uses gas and battery power to power the car (but can still run on battery power alone but not for extended distances). Basically, the Volt uses electricity as its primary power source and gasoline as its secondary power source whereas the Prius (and nearly all other hybrids) use electricity and gasoline as its primary source.

Some regard the BMW M3 as the best car in the world. The original M3 was born in 1986 but wasn't available in America until 1988. Since then, it has become legendary with its high level of performance, refinement, and luxury. It has come a long way since with upgraded luxury and perhaps more importantly, performance. The current generation M3 is powered by a V8 for the first time in history which gains fifteen percent more power over its predecessor yet is also more fuel efficient. Competitors have tried and tried again to knock off the M3 from the top with Lexus being the newest rival. Lexus is relatively new to the sports sedan world. Their traditional goals sought luxury and refinement with performance being sacrificed for a soft, supple ride. All that changed with the introduction of the Lexus IS-F. The IS-F is based on the Lexus IS obviously but was developed at Fuji speedway for a performance makeover. It comes packed with a 5.0L V8 that rivals the BMW's 4.0L V8 engine along with a tuned sports suspension.

While the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic remain the two sales leaders in the compact car segment, the Mazda 3 is gaining more and more attention. The previous generation was regarded highly for its driving dynamics and refinement but never was really a looker. Not much has changed with the new Mazda 3.
